This factsheet distills Sheftel and Zembrzycki’s “We Started Over Again, We Were Young”: Postwar Social Worlds of Child Holocaust Survivors in Montreal. Integration into Quebec was difficult for child Holocaust survivors, leading them to often form new social worlds of their own. In doing so, survivors exercised their agency and shaped places for themselves in Montreal and general Quebec society. Survivors aimed to, and succeeded in, declare their independence and ensure the continuity of Jewish people in Quebec.
