Factsheet

Description

This factsheet summarizes Sylvia Van Kirk's history of Indigenous/non-Indigenous marriage in colonial Canada. Marriage processes changed from "marrying-in" in the early 19th century (when European fur traders married into Indigenous families) to "marrying-out by the late 19th century (when Indigenous women lost their 'Indian status' for marrying European men).
