This factsheet summarizes Mi’kmaq scholar Fred Metallic’s piece Treaty in Mi’gmewey. This work discusses the importance of extended family and Mi’kmaq creation story on Mi'kmaq treaties with the land and animals, as well as with other people. The concept of “living treaty” describes the ongoing process of treaties, their fluidity and relation to intergenerational knowledges. Mi’kmaq political governance and ecology, rather than eurocentrism, are central to fighting for Mi’kmaq sovereignty.
